19th August, 2026, Jinja – Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern, but early detection and treatment can save lives and prevent further transmission.

To strengthen access to TB services across the region, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital operates a mobile TB screening truck that takes screening and diagnostic services closer to communities across the 14 districts of the Busoga region.

The mobile TB truck works in collaboration with health centres within the region, supporting them to identify people who may have TB and facilitating timely diagnosis and linkage to treatment.

Equipped with digital X-ray and GeneXpert technology, the truck provides an important extension of TB diagnostic services beyond the hospital setting. Digital X-ray helps health workers identify lung abnormalities that may be associated with TB, while GeneXpert testing can detect TB bacteria in patient samples and determine whether the bacteria shows resistance to rifampicin, an important TB medicine.

By bringing these services closer to communities, the programme helps reduce barriers to TB screening and supports health facilities to identify cases earlier.

The mobile approach is particularly important for reaching communities where access to specialised diagnostic services may be limited. Through collaboration with health centres across Busoga, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital continues to support decentralised TB screening, diagnosis and referral, contributing to efforts to reduce the spread and impact of TB in the region.
