About Jinja Regional Referral Hospital

Jinja Regional Referral Hospital commonly known as Jinja Hospital, is a government owned referral hospital that was established in the 1930s’ as a health unit for World War II combatants and prisoners of war from Kimaka. In the course of time, the unit was upgraded to a district hospital and eventually into a Regional Referral Hospital for the eastern region in 1995.

The hospital is located in the South-Eastern part of Uganda. It is located at two sites and offers the whole range of health services except the super-specialized ones. Annexed to Jinja Hospital is the Children’s Hospital in Nalufenya.  The hospital is a 500-bed capacity hospital with a staffing level of 85%.

The hospital serves approximately a population of 4.5 million in a catchment area comprising of 1 city and 11 districts (Jinja City, Jinja, Iganga, Kamuli, Mayuge, Namutumba, Bugweri, Buyende, Luuka, Kaliro, Namayingo, Bugiri). The hospital also serves the neighboring districts of Mukono, Buikwe, Kayunga, Buvuma, Busia, Tororo among others.

The hospital serves as a referral for 6 general hospitals both Private not for profit (PNFP) and a number of private for profit (PFP) within the region (Kakira, Kamuli Mission Hospital, Nyenga, Buluuba, Kamuli district hospital, Kawolo, Iganga, Kagoma and Bugiri general hospitals).

The hospital serves 22 health centre IV’s namely: Budondo, Bugembe, Bugono, Bumanya, Kaliro, Buwenge, Busesa, Buyinja, Kidera, Mayuge, Kigandalo, Kityerera, Kiyunga, Malongo, Nakasongola, Mpumude, Namwendwa, Nankandulo, Nankoma, Ngando, Nsinze and Walukuba.

Jinja Regional Referral Hospital is designated as an Internship center, where graduates of Ugandan medical schools can undergo a year of internship under the supervision of consultants and specialists in the designated medical and surgical disciplines.

Location

The hospital is located in the center of Jinja City, not far from the Source of the Nile. The hospital is located approximately 84 kilometers (52 mi) east of Mulago National Referral Hospital. The coordinates of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital are: 00°25’52.0″N, 33°12’18.0″E (Latitude:0.431111; Longitude:33.205000).
